Over the past two weeks, the New Zealand boating community has been captivated by the Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge. From the emotional departure in Opua through to the final finishers arriving on Australia's Gold Coast, the race has delivered an unforgettable display of courage, perseverance and seamanship.

With thousands following the tracker, daily updates generating strong engagement, and sailors battling everything the Tasman Sea could throw at them, the event has captured the imagination of offshore sailors and supporters alike.

A huge congratulations goes to every competitor who accepted the challenge of sailing more than 1,300 nautical miles alone across one of the world's most demanding stretches of water. The race has showcased not only exceptional sailing ability, but also the grit, resilience and determination required to keep pushing forward when faced with fatigue, isolation and challenging conditions.

Leading the fleet was Guy Chester aboard the trimaran Oceans Tribute, claiming line honours after an impressive crossing of 6 days, 7 hours, 34 minutes and 36 seconds. Close behind was Sharon Ferris-Coat aboard Vixen Racing, making history as the first monohull to finish and delivering one of the standout performances of the event.

James Foster aboard Electron completed a remarkable high-speed crossing to finish third, while Malcolm Dickson aboard Sarau and Peter Elkington aboard Pacman provided one of the most exciting battles of the race, crossing the line just 24 minutes apart after nearly two weeks at sea.

The final chapter of the challenge belonged to Doug Esterman aboard Fair Seasons, who completed his crossing in 11 days, 23 hours, 57 minutes and 8 seconds. His arrival was a fitting reminder that every sailor who reached Southport achieved something extraordinary. Regardless of finishing position, each competitor demonstrated the spirit that defines offshore sailing.

The inaugural Opua to Southport Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge has been a tremendous success, creating excitement on both sides of the Tasman and firmly establishing itself as a significant new event on the offshore sailing calendar.

To all competitors, support crews, volunteers, sponsors and organisers — congratulations on making history. We hope everyone enjoys the celebrations and prizegiving this Sunday. It is a moment well deserved after an incredible journey.
