Sailing Yacht Deriska – 50ft Refit & a Full Circle Story
Over four months, Deriska has been transformed at the Bay of Islands Boatyard, completing a full exterior repaint alongside an extensive refit.
At 50ft, this classic sailing vessel showcases the scale and capability of our Marine Services Precinct, with multiple specialist teams working together to deliver a high-quality finish.
The project also carries a special story. Owner Deniz grew up sailing on Deriska with her parents and is now, alongside her partner Mahmut, setting off on a new chapter aboard the same boat — a true full-circle moment.
A standout example of what’s possible when experienced teams come together — delivering quality, precision and results for larger vessels.

Full exterior repaint – Opua Boatyard Spray Shop
-
Fabrication and polishing – Fish Eye Fabrication

"It’s no wonder you won boat yard of the year...
...The service and ease of securing an endless flow between tradies to carry out work on our launch has been a wonderful experience.
While dealing with a family issue and unable to visit the yard during the work period, we never felt we did not know what was happening, as we were kept well informed throughout the duration.
To the staff and contractors who carried out the work
— THANK YOU VERY MUCH"
— Greg & Michelle

Top Tips from Rhys

Boatyard Manager Rhys Dempster shares his practical advice for keeping your boat in top condition over the quieter months:
“While ‘wintering your boat’ is more commonly associated with colder climates, the cooler season here in New Zealand still sees many vessels sitting inactive for long stretches. A bit of preventative care now goes a long way.”
✅ Keep Your Fuel Tanks Full
Top off your fuel tanks and add a fuel additive to prevent condensation forming — moisture in your tank can lead to diesel bug contamination, which is costly and time-consuming to fix.
✅ Check Your Seacocks
Ensure all seacocks are closed. While you're at it, open and close them a few times to test for stiffness or resistance. If anything feels off, note it for your next haul-out.
✅ Look After Your Electrics
Isolate any electrical systems not connected to your battery banks. All batteries should remain fully charged and ideally connected to shore power to cycle properly.
✅ Keep Airflow Moving
Mould thrives in sealed-up boats. Ventilation is key — open a weatherproof hatch if possible, or use dehumidifiers set to medium or a timer to protect interior timber.
✅ Schedule Maintenance Now
Winter is the best time to complete planned maintenance or upgrades. Avoid the spring rush and ensure you're ready for a worry-free summer on the water.
✅ Check EWOF & Lead Tag
Take advantage of downtime to ensure your Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) and Lead Tag are up-to-date and compliant.
✅ Clean the Bait Freezer
Not planning to use it? Empty and unplug your bait freezer. A power failure while it's full can lead to a far bigger mess (and bill) than just lost bait.
