Recently, the team at Bay of Islands Marina received a heartfelt message from offshore cruiser and expedition sailor Jean Peccoud as he prepared to depart Opua aboard Rosemary bound for New Caledonia and eventually Alaska.
After spending 51 days in Opua preparing the vessel for departure, Jean shared a moving reflection on the people, businesses and marine specialists who helped bring the project together.

In his words:
“Over 51 days in Opua, New Zealand, an entire community helped transform Rosemary from a recently purchased sailboat into an offshore-ready expedition vessel. This is a reflection on the people, craftsmanship, uncertainty, and effort behind preparing for departure into the Pacific.”
Jean’s story, titled Letters from the Dock, highlights not only the technical work completed during Rosemary’s preparation, but also the relationships, conversations and support built across the marina community throughout the project.
The reflection calls out the incredible range of expertise available within Opua’s Marine Services Precinct — from specialist marine trades and technical support through to the many local businesses and individuals who contributed to getting Rosemary offshore-ready for the Pacific crossing ahead.
“As we prepare to leave Opua for New Caledonia, I wanted to thank all of you again for the incredible amount of work, expertise, patience and kindness you brought to this project over the last 51 days,” Jean shared.
He also reflected on how unexpected the experience was before arriving in Opua:

“One of the things I wanted this piece to capture is how remarkable the Opua community really is. Before arriving, I had no idea a small harbor could concentrate so much expertise, craftsmanship and willingness to help.”
Stories like Jean’s highlight the strength of the wider Opua marine community — from skilled trades and technical specialists through to the everyday conversations, support and problem-solving that help sailors prepare for ambitious offshore journeys.
We thank Jean for his incredibly kind words and wish him safe travels on the next stage of the Rosemary expedition north toward Alaska.
