National attention is building for the upcoming Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge, with RNZ’s The Detail recently featuring the race in a dedicated podcast episode.

The story highlights what is shaping up to be a record fleet, along with insights from competitor Malcolm Dickson and Race Director Julie Kidman,

At 79, Dickson is the oldest entrant in the race, yet remains one of the favourites to take the title. Backed by decades of offshore sailing experience, he brings both resilience and race craft to a fleet that promises to be highly competitive.

Three unique advantages of the race now starting from Opua were also discussed. With a well-established marine services precinct, competitors can complete preparations with access to a full range of expert marine trades, from boat builders through to chandlery and rigging services, all in one location to ensure they are race ready.

As an official customs port of entry, clearing New Zealand is straightforward and streamlined. Plus the location also offers a more favourable start, giving skippers an initial coastal leg before heading out into the Tasman.

With the race start at Noon on 30th May, anticipation is continuing to build. A strong line-up, experienced skippers and the raw challenge of a solo Tasman crossing all point to an exciting and closely contested race ahead.
