A joint training exercise was recently held in Opua, coordinated by the Northland Regional Council Maritime team in collaboration with Maritime New Zealand. The day also brought together staff from Marsden Point and another Northland division of the Regional Council, highlighting the importance of collective readiness in protecting our marine environment.
The exercise showcased the capabilities of the maritime response equipment available in Northland. With national assets stored right here in Opua, the region is well-placed to provide a rapid and effective response to incidents that could threaten our coastal waters and marine life.
Led by Deputy Harbour Master Pete Thomas, Harbour Master Jim Lyle, and the NRC Maritime team, with support from Maritime New Zealand staff, the initiative was a valuable opportunity to put training into practice. It also reinforced the close working relationships between agencies, which are essential when responding to real-world maritime events.
Why Training Matters
As a marina, we understand the significance of preparation and teamwork. Training exercises like this ensure that when emergencies occur - whether spills, accidents or unexpected environmental threat, our region is equipped to act quickly and effectively. Protecting the marine environment is not only about safeguarding the beauty of the Bay of Islands, but also about protecting livelihoods, communities and the wider ecosystems that rely on healthy waters.
“Preparedness is the cornerstone of resilience — by working alongside the Regional Council and our partner agencies, we ensure that Northland’s marine environment is protected, our communities are supported, and we are ready to respond swiftly and effectively to any major event.” Rhys Dempster Boatyard Manager
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this exercise, selected staff will attend the Regional Response Training session in Auckland in the coming months. This next step will further strengthen Northland’s spill response capability and enhance the pool of trained responders across the region.
We are proud to support and be part of a community that values preparation, protection and care for the marine environment. By working together, we ensure that the Bay of Islands and the wider Northland coastline - remains a safe, sustainable and world-class destination for all who live, work and visit here.
