Yesterday marked the start of something truly special, as Bay of Islands Marina proudly farewelled a new crew of rangatahi embarking on the R. Tucker Thompson’s 7-Day Leadership Voyage.

Each year, Bay of Islands Marina sponsors 12 students from local colleges to take part in this transformative experience at sea. The voyage isn’t just about sailing – it’s about building leadership, resilience, confidence and teamwork in a completely unique environment.
The Tucker Thompson recently flipped from its busy summer tourism season into this youth development mode, kicking off its 2025 youth programme with YTH2502 Far North Leadership Voyage. As the sails were hoisted and the ship slipped out of Opua, a mix of nerves and excitement filled the air.
“What I’ll remember most is the difference between the first day and the last day,” shared one past participant. “We began as strangers on this trip across the vast unknown ocean but eventually became great friends.”
Bay of Islands Marina is proud to continue supporting this iconic programme and the next generation of Northland leaders.
Bon voyage, crew – we can’t wait to hear your stories when you return.
