Why our Clean Marina status matters

At Bay of Islands Marina, we believe that protecting our marine environment is just as important as providing a world-class facility. That’s why we’re proud to maintain our official Clean Marina status – a recognition of our ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, responsible boating and preserving the beauty of our region for generations to come.

The Clean Marina programme, led by the NZ Marine and NZ Marina Operators Association (NZMOA), sets a high bar for environmental care in marina operations. To be certified, marinas must meet a comprehensive checklist of criteria that includes everything from waste management and spill prevention to stormwater controls and water quality.

💧 So, what does this mean in practice?

It means we’ve got robust systems in place to manage pollutants, recycle where possible, and ensure that our boatyard and water-based operations are carried out with the environment front of mind. Whether it’s our dedicated boat wash-down area, clearly marked recycling stations, or staff training on best practices, we’re doing the mahi every day.

🛥️ It also means a better experience for you.

Boaties who choose a Clean Marina can trust that they’re in a facility that actively looks after the marine environment and supports sustainable boating. Clean Marina standards help keep our waters healthier, safer and more enjoyable to navigate – whether you're here for a few days or calling Opua your home port.

🌿 Protecting paradise – together

We're proud of this stunning corner of Aotearoa and we see environmental responsibility as a shared journey. We appreciate our berth holders, visitors and service providers who help us uphold these standards. Your care and consideration go a long way.

You’ll find our Clean Marina plaque displayed with pride at the marina – but the real proof is in the actions we take every day.
