Tender services and Tidal flow

Bay of Islands Marina is situated at the confluence of a river system and large sea channel. A tidal flow can be experienced of up to 1.8knts on peak ebb flows. This can make berthing in some berths in the marina a little challenging for those unfamiliar with the marina. If you require any assistance berthing please contact the marina office on Channel 73 requesting such assistance. Tender assistance has a small charge and staff will catch lines at no charge.


Netstop (via paypal) provides internet connection in the marina. Ask our customer service team in the marina office to assist you, or enjoy our free wifi in the visitor lounge and media room 1st floor.


Water from marina taps is drinkable, but chlorinated please disconnect your hose and turn off taps after use to save water and reduce trip hazards.

Super Yacht Facilities

Boats up to 50m can be berthed on a floating marina on the inside of the Opua Wharf. Vessels up to 100m are catered for on the outside of the wharf. Facilities include customs clearance, power, bunkerage, fresh water, pump out/discharge, provisioning services, parking and security checks.

Storage Units

Get all the cruising gear off your boat for the season and enjoy New Zealand in comfort! Large and small storage units are available for hire from the marina office.


$2.00 for five minutes. Change is available at the Marina Office.

Bay of Islands Marina offers good pressure hot showers which are available to Marina users. Disabled facilities are available.


Marina pier gates gate are locked 24/7, access is authorised by electronic FOB or via pin codes issued from the marina office.

Carparks have security lighting and there is several security patrols throughout the night backed up with 26 CCTV security cameras operating over the whole estate.

Waste/Rubbish and Recycling

Casual users – $5.00 per bag
Recycling – Free for berth-holders or marina users

Refuse & recycle centres are located opposite B & H piers for marina users.

Waste oil can be disposed of in the container at the southern end of the marina car park. Oil for disposal, must be uncontaminated – NO DIESEL.

Old batteries maybe left near the waste oil container.

Pump-out Facilities

There is a free service available on the fuel dock. For vessels berthed at the Opua Wharf berths there are pump out facilities. A fee applies. Ask the marina office staff for assistance.

On-board Maintenance

No welding, grinding, sand/water blasting or spray painting is permitted within the marina. We can offer you a spot on our work jetty or on our hardstand at the boatyard for these jobs to be carried out. Contact the marina office to arrange a maintenance berth booking.

Health & Safety

When employing a contractor to work on your vessel it is the boat owners responsibility to ensure that the contractor has signed in with the Marina or Boatyard office and that you are dealing with a Certified Tradesman and that the Boat and Contractor have the necessary insurance.

Oil Disposal

Available at the marina and boatyard. please carefully transfer your waste  oil into the holding container and put your empty container in the recycling area.

No Discharge

The Bay of Islands has a no discharge policy and a zero tolerance for offenders. Boats within the marina must comply with this rule. Security checks are conducted to ensure that the diverter or thru-hull have been locked.

Please respect our pristine cruising grounds and use our free pump-out facilities provided by the marina and on each of the wharf berths.

The pump-out facility is located on the fuel dock and is self-serve – available 24/7 and is free of charge. The BOI Marina and Mooring field are NO DISCHARGE AREAS. Please be sure to use your holding tanks and the on-shore facilities. Seals are provided to seal toilets on check-in, this is compulsory and our Marina staff will ask to check that your boat is complying. Bay of Islands Marina appreciate your support.

Mooring Lines

Mooring Lines are the responsibility of the boat owner. If lines are provided on the berth, they will be owned by the berth holder. Please DO NOT alter these in any way. Our preference is that you provide your own lines. Always have extra lines ready as some berth owners do remove their lines when they rent out the berth.

Marina Office

The office is located on the ground level of the marina building next to the laundry. The building also has the café, boat insurance and boat brokerage services.

Marina Key Fob

Available from the marina office for a refundable deposit of $20.00 – cash only, please.

This will give you 24/7 access to marina piers, showers/toilets, visitors lounge, rubbish compounds and laundromat. These access devices are not to be shared with unauthorised users and Pier gates and facility doors must be closed by berth users and must not be ‘wedged open’.

Marina Depth

Depths within the marina range from 2-11 metres at mean low water. Let the marina office know the draft of your boat and they will allocate a berth accordingly.

The marina office is a convenient pick up/drop off point for couriers.



The marina laundry is open from 7am until late. The laundry is located on the ground floor, at the south end of the marina office building.

Washing machines – $4.00
Dryers – $2.00 (15 minutes)

Change is available at the marina office. Please store away your bucket!

Washing Machines (hot and cold wash) and dryers are available. An ironing board is also available (see the Marina office for an iron).


Third Party Insurance is the minimum required for all boats visiting the marina with a minimum of $5,000,000. You will need to provide a CURRENT certificate of Insurance when you check into the Marina office when confirming your berthing arrangements.

A current NZ Electrical Warrant of Fitness is required if the vessel is hardwired which is required to be sighted by the Marina staff or hard copy to be provided to the Marina office during registration process. If your vessel is not hardwired, please discuss options with the Marina office before plugging in. The Marina office staff are able to arrange an electrician to check your boat and issue the required certificate if needed.

Requirements for vessel connecting in Marina.

Power charges available on daily or monthly rates.

Power is 240 Volt, 50 Hz

Up to 16 meter berths: 16 amp

Over 16 meter berths: 32 amp

Connection is with a blue male connector. All power leads must be tagged and tested by a certified electrical company and proof shown to our marina office when requested. Every power point is protected by its own RCD, which is mounted above the plug socket.

A temporary connection to shore power can be made available by hiring a shore connection cable and power connection box from the Marina office.
